Our 20-year-old oak trees are causing $400,000 worth of damage to our sidewalks and gutters. We are in Naples Florida with sandy soil. Can we use bio barriers to isolate the root system adjacent to the sidewalks? Thank you

Raymond Golino. That’s pretty ironic because up here in Chicago we have 300-year-old oak trees capable of living out another 300 years that are worth $400,000. Since it sounds like your trees are only doing what comes natural to them. Of course we should not be surprised since in a way by creating certain conditions, it’s like we asked them to do it.

And seeing your trees are more deeper rooting oak compared to shallow rooting maple. No Doubt there had been a good deal of disturbance to the Natural grade.

Might the locations water table possibly cause said problems? Amending sand with Organic material could tip growth conditions in your favor. But you might need a lot and it might only be a temporary fix.

When you install root barriers remember they must rise at least equal if not higher than sidewalk. Otherwise they will jump over.

Try looking into soil horizon subject. As multiple Subterranean ground layer types symbiotically function together. But by adding a new layer directly on top of already existing layer. New tree roots could be easily deflected from growing past level where those two layers meet.

As an arborist we do what’s called vertical mulching. Which involves aerating ground using Compressed Air wand. And rather than completely aerating entire area. Blow out ground material in a spaced out grid pattern and refill holes with mushroom compost mixed with slow release potassium which is fertilizer Roots prefer.

Ok, why aren’t Roots growing deeper? Because they need oxygen in order to function. shallow root production especially on top of the ground. Indicates the ground is either naturally not conducive to root growth or had been mechanically compacted to the extent atmospheric oxygen is being blocked from percolating down below ground.

When we install sidewalks, grade is mechanically compacted in order to prevent settling. Then because of temperature difference along Underside of sidewalk slab. Moisture from condensation actually encourages juvenile roots to explore under slab. Then once reaching other side of sidewalk, Roots can then expand throughout a whole new area.

Also know that root girth expands most along top surface. Anytime there is excavation then refilled. Loosened grade containing more air pockets which encourages new root growth.

Lastly anytime severing large roots back make sure to cleanly cut them. And on an angle you wish for them to regrow towards.

I am a website designer. Recently, I am designing a website template about gate.io. The boss’s requirements are very strange, which makes me very difficult. I have consulted many websites, and later I discovered your blog, which is the style I hope to need. thank you very much. Would you allow me to use your blog style as a reference? thank you!

Scott Carlini. It was painful to read your comment. Please have someone proofread your comments before you post them. I’m guessing English isn’t your first language, which isn’t an issue, but it does make reading what you wrote very difficult.
